Basement Waterproofing Contractors
When digging a basement deeper..?
My home currently has a basement approx. 5.5 feet deep. It appears this basement was added after the home was built. The walls leak and the basement will sometimes flood. I would like to have this basement dug out and waterproofed and then I will finish the basement myself once all that is done. My question is, does anyone have any idea what the cost to have the basement dug deeper and the cost to have the basement waterproofed would be? Has anyone had this done? This is also a huge endeavor and given the risks involved with this, what should I be looking for when talking to contractors other then making sure they have valid insurance?
First time asking question, not sure what he’s referring to.
I am not an expert in basement construction, and maybe digging out the basement is indeed necessary….But depending on the degree of leaking/flooding, I would consider a couple of alternatives to digging first.
Without having more info, the two things that are a given are that there is too much water on the exterior side of your basement walls, and, as you stated, the basement leaks. So to start with the first issue, I am assuming that this basement does not fall below waterlevel (in which case costs to “dig out the basement”, “dig deeper”, and “waterproof” would be even greater because you’re essentially building what amounts to an inside-out swimming pool, or rather…a boat.). So how about looking into ways to divert water away from the basement walls to begin with? Does the house have a system of gutters that divert water away from the foundation or does any rain water just drench into the soil around the foundation? Does water tend to puddle around the house (i.e. grading away from the house or towards it?)? Both of these may go a long way in minimizing the amount of water pressing on your basement walls…
And as far as the leaks go, there are methods of waterproofing from the interior of the basement for relatively “minor”cracks. But really, it depends on where the leak(s) are originating from. It may be easier said than done in the end, but I would check out the links below. There is a good amount of information on troubleshooting even if you should decide to go forward with solving the problem from the exterior.
good luck
