Home Security Tips

Security has never been so important for the home. So many homes today are filled with expensive gadgets galore making them more of a target to intruders than ever. It is important therefore that your secure your home the best way possible. This article outlines some simple yet effective tips to ensure that your home stays secure.

Your home is the place where you feel safest and in order to keep it that way, you need to ensure any unwanted people are kept out. That means reviewing the security measures you have in place to make you a low risk target for burglars and thieves. Here are ten top tips to ensure you are not at risk of break-ins.

Tip #1

Close all windows when you leave the house. It may seem obvious, but houses with open windows are easy targets, even if the windows left open are on the top floor. Spend an extra minute checking you have closed and locked all your windows when leaving your house. For an added deterrent consider placing stickers advertising the fact you have an alarm system or a dog (even if you do not). This will make your house less of an appealing prospect for burglars.

Tip #2

Ensure all your doors are secure. The easiest way to break into a house is by simply kicking the door down. Houses that have wooden doors with rotting frames are the easiest targets. Make sure you have good quality doors that look and are secure. An added security measure would be to consider installing rock doors, which are almost impossible to break down.

Tip #3

Leave a light on when you go out at night. Burglars will target houses that look empty in order to secure the greatest loot with the least amount of trouble. If a light can be seen from the outside of the house, this will deter burglars as it means they cannot be certain the house is empty. If you live in an area where security is a particular problem, consider leaving the television or radio on as well.

Tip #4

Install an exterior light. If a burglar is approaching the house and an exterior light comes on, they will think twice about proceeding. They prefer to work under the cover of darkness, as there is less chance of being caught. An exterior light will alert you and your neighbours to an intruder.

Tip #5

Invest in heavy curtains that completely cover the window. If you have lightweight curtains that have gaps in the middle, burglars can easily look into your house and see what valuables you have. Thick curtains with no gaps are particularly important for rooms that have expensive equipment in. If burglars do not know what is on offer, they are less likely to want to break in.

Tip #6

If you have a gate to the back of your house, make sure it is locked when you go out. To forget to lock a back gate is an easy mistake to make when leaving your house. However, if you take an extra thirty seconds to ensure it is secure, you will ensure no-one has easy access to the back of your house, where potentially there are less people to see a burglar enter.

Tip #7

Mark all your electronic equipment with UV pen. Write your postcode on all electronic equipment in a UV pen to identify it as yours. If your valuables are marked if a burglar does get past your security systems then any equipment stolen will be identifiable as yours. This increases your chances of getting it back and the offender being caught.

Tip #8

Install an alarm system. Although this can be expensive, it is a good investment. Nothing deters burglars more than the sight of an alarm box on the front of a house. It is very unlikely a burglar will get any further than forcing the door open without realising they will be caught if they steal anything from your home.

Tip #9

Get involved in neighbourhood watch. If there is an existing neighbourhood watch community get involved in it. If there is not, why not start one up. One of the best ways to ensure your home is safe is to know there are others looking out for you. Advertise that you are a neighbourhood watch area and this will act as an excellent deterrent.

Tip #10

Add extra security to parts of your house that may be particularly vulnerable. If you have a basement window or a handy drainpipe to a particular window do something about it. Extra locks or if you are in a rough area bars on the window will ensure your home remains safe.

Finally, remember to use your common sense. If you think there is a security issue in your home address it. Lock up carefully before you leave and use your judgement in choosing methods to deter burglars. That is the best way to stay safe.
