Damp Basement
Musty and damp in our finished basement. What to do?
We live in a tri-level house. Our basement is finished and it’s where we spend most of our time. Behind our couch in the corner it’s damp and the wall is moldy, plus there is a musty smell. We have had alot of rain. Would a dehumidifier help to dry out and get rid of the musty smell? How big of one should I get and where should I place it (next to the couch where the problem is) also are there any alternatives?
A dehumidifier will help and it doesn’t matter too much where you place it. Find the source of the water and fix that. The most common problem is ground next to the house that slopes toward the house rather than away from it. Builders often do not adequately compact the ground next to the basement wall and settling leads to a slope toward the house. Gutters that do not drain properly or downspouts not directed away from the house adequately are another problem.
Was the basement EVER dry? Your house would not be the first to have been built on a spring or old creek bed. In that case, there will be very expensive work required that basically involves putting an underfloor ditch around the perimeter with a pump and well in a deeper part to get rid of the water.
