Finished Basement Fireplaces
Running gas line to convert woodburning FP to ventless gas?
I am currently finishing my basement and would like to convert my current woodburing fireplace to a gas burning. I have already purchased a ventless gas buring log set and the current natural gas connection is only about 10 to 15′ away. I am very handy but have never messed with gas connections, other than installing appliances before. I have been having a hard time finding good references for running the gas line, can anyone help?
I thnk no one is touching this because of the issue of gas connections. No problem at the log set, as it is already fitted for correct connection. Problem is at the other end, the gas feed. You would have to turn off all gas at your house, possibly attempt to purge the lines from the main unless there is another shutoff between main and your current connection. That is for safety reasons. No sense blowing up your hair and whatever else is in the vicinity.
Having said all that, the building supply stores (menards is currently running a sale on flex gas lines), can provide you with the line, but then you have to match up your feed end with whatever connector is available at the feed.
I think this is really a fairly quick job for a gas person, someone who knows what they are doing and can make the right connection at the feed side. Otherwise, you are just asking for potential issues, like leaks that could start a nasty situation for you.
Running the line, if you are redoing your basement, is easy. You either drill studs and snake the line, or you place the line at the bottom of your sole plate and eventually cover with some type of decorative stuff. Personally, I would not do that, even though you could go below drywall lower end if the line is not too large in diameter, then cover with baseboard and quarter round.
