Finished Basement Home Theaters

Need ideas for finishing a partial basement?

All I ever wanted out of a house was a home theater system in the basement. Well I’ve bought my first house, and I’m having difficulty with a plan for the downstairs. It’s a longer basement than it is wide, but the real problem is that I’ve got a sump pump, furnace, hot water tank, plumbing, etc. all throughout the outside edge of the room. Then the basement support posts are there. Between the stuff on the outside of the room and the posts on the inside (which cannot actually be removed without the house caving into the basement), there are no regular shapes, and a lot of obstructions to different views. Any thoughts on how to work this out? Thanks for your help!

The best answer is to look at the biggest open area you have. My guess is that you’re going to have to work between two of the support posts, arranging your home theater with it’s long dimension across the width of your basement. That arrangement may not create the environment you’re after, but hopefully it will get close. Fir out the back wall to drywall over any pipes or wires along the wall (or to enclose any utilities there), and fir out the front wall – which is hopefully relatively free of anything. Build the side walls to enclose the basement supports, and leave a second door in the room to access any part of the basement you’ve enclosed behind the theater room. You can create a little more room by creating an alcove off to one side of the room for audio equipment or other things that don’t require a straight line of sight.

Lastly, basements can be nice and cool in the summer – a wonderful place for condensation which will kill your equipment. Make sure to incorporate a dehumidifier of some kind. Good luck!
