Help! Raw sewage problem!?

I live in a rental house on Long Island, NY. My husband, three young children and I have been here since March of 2008. We bought a house in Herndon, Va and we are moving out on June 12th. Here is my problem:

About 4 days ago we started to have raw sewage back up into the basement shower when the washer drains water. I called my landlord and told him about it and he said for us to just wait until after we move out and he’ll fix the problem then. I again stated that it was not just water backing up but raw sewage. His cell phone disconnected and he’s not called me back. Is it his responsibility to hire a plumber at this point and fix this now even though we are moving out in 3 weeks? I am cleaning up raw sewage and my children play in the basement (it is a converted finished family room), and this is just plain gross! What can I do? Thanks.

I don’t care if you are moving out tomorrow—this is a health issue and needs to be corrected ASAP….If he still doesn’t respond–contact your local health inspector at town hall.. The fact that you are moving—doesn’t give him any right to expose your family to unsanitary conditions in the meantime… This is not peeling paint you are complaining about.
