Can a faulty Power Supply cause a the GPU to overheat?
I Have an ASUS 8800gtx video card that runs great, but when you put some pressure on it
(Games like Metro2033 or Starcraft2) it overheats to about 90c (That’s when i panic and quit the game)..
I Have 2 side fans blowing cool air from an Air Conditioned room onto the card (And a stock fan cooler working at 100%) and all the rest of the parts are running on normal temp.. I replaced the mother board and the RAM but it didn’t help..
The only part I can think about that have some connection to the video card is the power supply.. Can that really be the cause of the overheat?
90C is perfectly fine for the 8800GTX. It won’t shut itself down unless its over 110C.
The 8800GTX is a large die size, on a large fabrication(nm) chip. All the beastly cards from that generation run hot.
(I remember a video of someone frying an egg on one of nVidias SLI sandwich cards from that time, it was well over 100C.)
A PSU can cause some minor difference in overall system temperature but certainly nothing needs upgrading if your card is only getting to 90C.
As long as your PSU has enough amps on the 12V rail, and enough watts then it will not be causing any stress to your graphics card.

The 8800GTX has 2 PCI-E power connectors. For it to work properly both should be connected to a PSU. It will run with only one power connector but not at full potential.
