Installing A Sump Pump
What is involved in installing a sump pump in a house?
Is it a big job? Does it involve ripping out the floor or land outside? Approximately what is a ball-park figure to expect it to cost?
If you are trying to solve a water problem in the basement, one method is to install drain tile under the slab floor and have it route to a sump hole in one corner of the basement. To install the tile (round black tubes with slots cut into it to allow the water in) you typically cut the slab near the wall about the thickness of the tile, dig out to the proper depth and install the tile, then cover with gravel and replace the cement. The pump itself just sits in the hole and is activated by a float that can tell when the hole fills with water. You route the water from the pump out into the back yard using plastic pvc pipe.
Some installations also include drain tile on the outside of the basement wall at the depth of the slab as well. this is way too much work if the house is built already.
Actually, both of these options are way too much work unless you live on very damp soil. I’ve owned around 35 houses over the years (most of them rental properties) and I have found that almost all problems with damp basements are cured by fixing the gutters, downspouts and extensions so the water that hits the roof gets far enough away from the house to flow away from it. I also have found that its necessary to have the ground against the foundation of your house slope away from the house as well. I just did a property the other day with one cubic yard of topsoil that cost me about $25. It went all the way around a 3 bedroom, two story house enough to solve the water seepage problem.
So unless your house is in a very low area, and the soil is often wet, just fix the gutters so they run right, and correct any ground that slopes toward the house and you will be surprised what that does.
