Kohler Portrait vs. Memoirs?
I’m trying to decide between these two toilets. Reviews online show that the Memoirs is a great toilet, but I can’t find anything on Portrait. Kohler says they are the same because the flushing system is the same, but why is it then that the Devonshire gets sush bad reviews when it also has the same flushing system??? Anybody with knowledge on this subject?
I put in a Devonshire in my previous house when we remodeled a bathroom 3 years ago and it worked great, no problems. The only real differences are the outward appearance, all the piping and equipment are the same. Consumer Reports rated the Devonshire as “fair” on solid waste performance, but I never had a problem. In relative terms, either will perform very well, but there are better toilets if you’re purely concerned about function. Both look great, and I matched the toilet with the sink, and used a Memoirs faucet. However, when I moved to another house and needed to replace a toilet, I went for function more, style less and installed an Eljer Titan.
Consumer Reports rates the Eljer Titan 091-0777 as the best gravity toilet and it runs about $300. You can get it at Lowe’s. Granted, it’s boring looking, and has no style but I’m not concerned about impressing anyone. It’s quiet, sits a little taller than most other toilets, and has a “light flush” feature. That is, if you just tip the handle, it only uses about a 1/2 gallon of water, and if you hold the handle down, it uses the whole tank.
Bottom line: Get the Devonshire or Portrait if you’re trying to match a “style”. Either will work very well, but might occasionally need help with a plunger. If it’s “function over form”, go with the Eljer.
