Rebuilt Water Pumps
I’ve a false engine temperature indication on my 98 Ford Contour.?
The temp needle varies from cold to overheating (pegged) within minutes and back again. It oscillates wildly, at points settling at normal for no apparent reason.
The engine isn’t overheating, checked with both a mechanical gauge and infrared temp device. The following are new or rebuilt:
Water pump
Radiator
Thermostat (all three have been tried, 180, 192, 195)
Temp sender, gauge
Temp sender, radiator fan
Low speed radiator fan relay
High speed radiator fan relay
A/C fan relay
Sorry Desparado, forgot that. Brand new dash gauge. Also (if it makes any difference) the engine is the 4 cylinder 2.0 Z-tech
a lot of cars have more than one temperature sensor.
Basically it is like this.They have a coolant temperature sensor and an engine temperature sensor. One of them is linked to the ECM computer and the other is linked up to the guage on the dashboard.ford has the bad habit of nameing a lot of thier parts with confuseing names,,at least to my way of thinking,,and I’m not always sure just what a particular part actually does.
For instance I looked up a Ford contour on Autozone,,I picked a 6 cylinder model. And looked for parts under ENGINE MANAGEMENT.
I came up with a Coolant Temperature Sensor and a Temperature Switch–both of which have electrical connections. I did not look any further for any more temperature parts, but it could be that the sensor you changed was not the one that controls the dash guage.
