THIN flat-panel TV with built-in DVD player?

My wife and I have been looking for a flat-panel TV with a built-in DVD player for our daughters room. The only units we’ve seen that have the built-in player are pretty thick and will stick out from the wall pretty far. Those TV’s have a distinctive “box” for the DVD player in the TV’s casing that make it so thick. You can’t tell me they can’t make DVD playing hardware small enough to fit in a flat screen without thickening it’s profile… My older MacBook has a Superdrive and its hardware can’t be thicker than 1/2″… If anyone knows where I can find a THIN flat screen TV with a built-in DVD player (without the stupid “box”) please let me know. Thanx.

It might be “possible” to get that, but its not something consumers seem to care enough about to warrant TV manufacturers to create it. Most people would rather have a DVD player and TV separate. You can get better image quality from a separate player, if the player dies you don’t have to send off the entire TV for repair, and with a dedicated player you can run the audio out to an A/V receiver.

“Thin” or small form factor parts, for anything is more expensive. Your MacBook is one of the more expensive laptop options on the market. Manufacturers want to make a profit and hit a specific price point with their TVs. So if using a thin profile DVD drive is going to push up the cost too much, then they’ll use the cheap bulky ones instead. So there is that to consider as well.

You clearly have a good purpose for needing the combo TV, but its not a popular thing among consumers. Case in point, Sasmung, Panasonic, and Sony don’t pursue it at all. They are the biggest manufacturers in the world, and don’t even think its worth the trouble to manufacture such a TV. Even LG and Sharp have very limited options in such a device. So again, there’s a lack of consumer demand to get what you’re looking for.

The 22″ Toshiba and Sharp ones on Best Buy are only listed as 2-5/8″ thick. How thin are you looking for exactly? The stand is quite a bit thicker though, but the TV itself doesn’t seem that bad.
