Sump pump room humidity?
I walked into our finished sump pump room in the basement today to discover it was extremely humid and there was mold growing on the walls. I was in there three days prior and everything was perfectly normal. We called our on call repair guys (service one). When the guy came out he discovered the builders of the home put a wye pipe on the sump pump exhaust pipe. The one side of the wye wasn’t capped and just pointing upwords to the Plexiglas cover. He covered the useless wye with a cap.
What caused the humidity and heat in the room? What all should I do or need to know prior to starting the insurance process? The carpet and walls are likely ruined.
What could be reasons the builders would put a wye pipe at the drainage point? I mean, the thing just basically would blast water up onto the Plexiglas and just fall right back into the basin.
If the sump ran with an open Y pipe then you were discharging most or some of the water to the sump room. Water will come out of the Y back down on the floor. If the Y is above the discharge goining outside It could still be possible for water escaping and draining back to the floor. also if discharge pipe outside freezes or gets blocked with snow the open Y was the next best place for is to discharge. I would place a vent in the door to the room and make sure your sump has a good lid on it. If you have any duct work running through the room you may want to insulate or put ceiling in to help lower temp swings in small space causing high humidity. If you are still unsure run a water hose down into the sump and watch it run check ing for leaks.
