How is the area for the purpose of calculating property taxes?

I'd check to see if the figures for the residential area where my house used to evaluate accuracy. I measured each room and include them or is it a total area of the shell. (Including walls), what about the hall and closet? Finished basement, unfinished basement? I think this may vary between jurisdictions. (I live in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania), but it is probably pretty standard for an answer from anywhere in the U.S. will be appreciated.
