What water sealant should I use to stop a leak between the wood plate and fiberglass mount for my seacock?
The wood plate that sits on top of the fiberglass is getting wet. There is no streaming water yet but I need a waterproof sealant because the wood is wet around the edges and I don’t want my boat to sink if the leak gets bigger. My boat is winterized and I plan to change the plate this Spring. HELP!!
I’m assuming that your bilge pump(s) are in good working order, and that battery power isn’t an issue. I wouldn’t do anything, until spring (60 days and counting) then repair when you are pulled for regular maintenance. I wouldn’t even touch the sea-cock. In the spring, check all sea-cocks. My thinking is that the wood has deteriorated slowly, and caulk cannot penetrate into it enough to stop the leak. I also know that if you haul now, it would mean that in the spring you would need to have the boat hauled a second time. I’m thinking hauling and blocking for bottom paint/or replacing all sea-cock mountings, checking for electrolysis, etc. If that is the cause of the problem, that’s another issue. But, I don’t think the boat is in immediate danger, so it will be ok till spring. In this case you have seen the boat and I haven’t, so use your best judgment.
